The land known today as Belvedere Park was originally owned by the Creek Indians and then was acquired by the State of Georgia. In 1785 the state legislature granted a tract of land to the city of Atlanta for use as a public park. Belvedere Park is the name of both a defunct amusement park and the surrounding neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. It was the first amusement park in Atlanta and is considered to be the oldest standing in the southeast. Like Piedmont Park, it was donated to the city by the family of Joel Hurt, and it was originally called Hurt’s Park. The neighborhood surrounding the park was also originally named Hurt Park.
