Chastain Park, Atlanta
Chastain Park, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is home to one of the country’s largest urban park systems. The 712-acre park features a variety of amenities, including tennis courts, a baseball field, a playground, a dog park, walking and jogging trails, and a lake. Chastain Park has been a popular spot with locals and visitors alike since 1913 when it was first opened. The park features 11 baseball fields, six tennis courts, two soccer fields, two football fields, two rugby fields, and a running track.
Chastain Park and Sandy Springs are both in the top 5 of Atlanta’s best neighborhoods. They are both safe, upscale, up and coming, and have unique characteristics. Chastain Park is more of a neighborhood for the retired, full-time residents, with an extensive system of parks, a golf club, and many local restaurants. While in Sandy Springs, Atlanta is the more modern of the two, with a huge variety of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife, as well as a big residential population.
It is one of the oldest public parks in metro Atlanta, so there’s really not much history we can tell you about the park itself. In 1927, the original park was opened to the public, and it quickly became a community gathering place. The fountain, the lake, and the animal house were all built in the 1930s, and the park was made a permanent city park in 1939. It’s important to note, however, that the park is not officially called Chastain Park. The proper name of the park is Chastain Park East since it lies in East Cobb County, and the park is actually owned by the city of Atlanta.
There is a small parking lot in the rear of the park and a large parking garage across the street from the park. There is also a MARTA station that is close by. There is a small bathroom building in the rear of the park. There are restrooms and water fountains throughout the park. There are tennis courts and a large open field. There are also walking trails throughout the park. There are no food vendors or picnic areas in the park.
The park is direct across from a large shopping mall called The Shops at Buckhead. The park is about a mile north of the campus of Georgia Tech and about a mile south of the Peachtree-Dunwoody MARTA station.
In the 1890s, wealthy businessman Joel Hurt and his wife, Margaret, began acquiring a large tract of land in what was then known as “North Atlanta.” By the turn of the century, they had amassed approximately 750 acres of land from what is today the Lindbergh and Briarcliff neighborhoods and along Peachtree and West Paces Ferry roads. The Hurts began building a residence and established a farm, but in 1904, Joel Hurt was killed by his wife’s lover, and his wife was forced to sell the property.
The 72 acres of land that makeup Chastain Park were purchased in 1878 by the wealthy and philanthropic Chastain family. The Christians also owned nearby Chastain residences, and it’s now a popular local attraction. Chastain Park includes one of Atlanta’s most popular restaurants, the Chastain Café, and a lovely garden and event center. There are also a number of special events that take place throughout the year including an Easter Egg hunt, Oktoberfest, and the annual Chastain Park Arts Festival.
As you enter the park from Peachtree Road, you will find yourself on a long, tree-lined entranceway leading to the park’s main road, which circles the park. This road is a popular running and biking path and is also dotted with benches and scattered shade trees.
In addition to the road, there are two other primary paths winding their way through the park. The Bear Path runs parallel to the park’s entranceway and travels south, beginning at the park’s tennis.

The Chastain Park Amphitheater is a massive amphitheater nestled into the side of a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River. Chastain is actually a pretty generic name, but really, it’s the only park in Atlanta where you’re likely to see a concert with a river running through it. You can spend an entire afternoon here. The park has a river. The park has fountains, playgrounds, and tennis courts. You can also find a walking path in the park. This is a great place for a picnic.
