The Chattahoochee Plantation was founded in 1822 by John Lemly, who was born in England. Lemly was a friend of Andrew Jackson and served under him in the Creek War. Lemly also received a land grant for his service, and after the war, he claimed 640 acres of land across the Chattahoochee River from Fort Benning. Lemly built a plantation house on his land and named it Chattahoochee, which means “river of rocks” in the Greek language. In 1823, Lemly’s brother-in-law, William P.
