Chattahoochee Plantation is a 1,400-acre plantation and National Historic Landmark that was founded in 1733. The plantation once served as the winter home for famous American figures like Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, and today visitors can explore 9 historic buildings, including the plantation house. Visitors can also enjoy the plantation’s 10 acres of gardens and grounds and even ride a horse or carriage through the property.

Lemly also received a land grant for his service, and after the war, he claimed 640 acres of land across the Chattahoochee River from Fort Benning. Lemly built a plantation house on his land and named it Chattahoochee, which means “river of rocks” in the Greek language. In 1823, Lemly’s brother-in-law, William P.
