Forsyth Park 

 

Forsyth Park is located in Savannah, Georgia and is the second largest park in the city. The park also offers numerous amenities including a playground, tennis courts, a skate park, walking/running paths, picnic areas and an amphitheater.

Forsyth Park is Savannah’s most famous public space, and it’s one of the most recognizable sites in the city for a good reason. Forsyth Park is a circular public space, designed by John Forsyth in 1825. The original park contained large oak trees, but the city’s expansion in the 1800s tore down most of the oaks, leaving only 14 oak trees and one cypress tree remaining. To prevent this from happening again, the city began a restoration project in 1956. Today, Forsyth Park is a 165-acre park that is home to the Forsyth Park Fountain, the Forsyth Fountain Skate Park, the Jaclyn Parker Children’s Garden, the Forsyth Park Dog Run, and dozens of other memorials and monuments.

It is one of the most beautiful and well-known parks in the entire country. The park that you see today has been around since the early 19th century, with a few changes here and there. At one point it was used as a burial ground for soldiers and slaves, but it was later converted into a park in the mid-1800s. It is known as the birthplace of the City of Savannah. Savannah is a city that is rich in history and full of beauty, charm, and southern hospitality. Savannah is located in the heart of the state of Georgia and is also referred to as the Hostess City of the South.
The park is named after General Edward L. Brigadier General James E. Forsyth, a hero of the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Forsyth was born in Savannah on October 14, 1830 and passed away in 1905, but his name is forever memorialized in a park that has become a focal point for the city

Forsyth Park is the oldest public park in Savannah, Georgia. It is operated by the Savannah-Chatham County Parks & Recreation. The 17-acre (69,000 m 2) park is located in the heart of Savannah, bounded by Gaston Street, Park Avenue, East President Street and East Park Avenue. The park is dedicated to John Forsyth, who was governor of Georgia from 1798 to 1802. The park was designed by William Jay. The Rogers House, an antebellum Greek Revival mansion, is located on the north side of the park. The house and park were designated as a Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1970.

The park was donated to the city in 1770 by James Habersham and has been open to the public since 1847. The fountain was donated to the city by Lachlan McIntosh and the statue atop the fountain by Sarah McIntosh. The park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Savannah.
