Magnolia Park/Blueberry Hill, Savannah 

 

Magnolia Park is arguably Savannah’s most well-known historic park, and is the only park that has an English name and a Dutch name. This park is so significant that in 1997 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark.

It is the oldest neighborhood in Savannah, and it offers a more laid-back, historic feel. Built-in the 1700s, the neighborhood is dense with historical houses and landmarks. The Magnolia Park Cemetery and the Old American Association for the Advancement of Science are nearby, along with Forsyth Park, which is also historic.

The Magnolia Park area is the first planned community in Savannah, Georgia. It was developed from 1904 to 1945 by the nationally famous landscape architect and city planner, John Nolen. In recognition of its importance to Savannah, the National Society of Landscape Architects designated Magnolia Park one of the top 100 Significant Landscape Designs of the 20th Century. Today the Park is a Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also part of the Savannah Historic Landmark District. The Park’s residential neighborhoods are listed as the Magnolia Park Historic District, The Blueberry Hill Historic District, and The Afton Village Historic District.

Magnolia Park/Blueberry Hill is a shaded and tranquil neighborhood located in the middle of Savannah. The neighborhood is located on the Isle of Hope and is just minutes away from downtown Savannah. It is a small, family-friendly area that has a feeling of “country in the city.”
It is in the midst of neighborhood revitalization. The area has very reasonable housing prices, with most homes selling between $200,000-$400,000. And also in a prime location for commuters, as it is just off of I-16 and is just minutes away from downtown Savannah.

The Park is a beautiful neighborhood with lots of historic homes and an active community. There is a parade and festival every year in May. The neighborhood is a short distance from Forsyth Park where you can find sculptures by the famous artist, Julian Hoke Harris. The Magnolia Park Restaurant, a local favorite, is within walking distance. It borders the neighborhoods of Eastside and Monterey Heights.

The 2010 census reported 8,198 persons living in 2,771 households in the City of Magnolia Park/Blueberry Hill. The racial makeup of the city was 55.3 percent African American, 38.5 percent White, 1.9 percent Asian, 1.2 percent Native American, less than one-tenth of one percent Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 1.1 percent reporting two or more races, and 5.3 percent Hispanic or Latino.

It is about 14 miles, but the best way to get from Savannah-Downtown to Magnolia Park/Blueberry Hill is to take I-16 W toward Savannah and then take exit 1 onto GA-204 S toward Savannah and continue to follow GA-204 S. Take the exit toward Abercorn St/US-80 E and continue onto Abercorn St. Turn left onto E Montgomery Cross Rd. Turn right onto E Broad St. Turn left onto W Montgomery Cross Rd. Turn left onto S McDonough St. Turn left onto E President St. Turn left onto Abercorn St. Turn left onto Sallie Mood Dr. Turn left onto E Lafayette St. Turn right onto Sallie Mood Dr. Turn left onto S Liberty St.

For the past decade or so, I’ve been trying to create a photo essay of all the houses on my street. We live in a small neighborhood that was built in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and most of our neighbors are fairly new to the area. The result is that in a decade or so, we’ve had a lot of turnovers, and it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more.

The neighborhood is close to the Savannah College of Art and Design, has lots of restaurants and shops, and is about a five-minute walk from Forsyth Park. The area is close to I-16 and is convenient to the Georgia 400 and I-516.

The Savannah School of Ballet is a home-based studio with classes offered at two convenient locations: Magnolia Park/Blueberry Hill.
